Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital
This section contains images of the former Hospital on Chawton Park road, you will notice the Hospital has been known by several different names over the years.
The Princess Louise Hospital 1903 - 1905
A Military hospital was built to help with the treatment of wounded soldiers from the 2nd Boer War (1899~1902) known as the A.M.B. or Absent Minded Beggar Hospital, however the war ended before the hospital was fully completed, meaning that it never accepted a single patient! Following a period of negotiation it was announced that it would become the Princess Louise Hopital, it was officially opened by the HRH Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll on the 16th June 1903 however it was only in use for a couple of years by the Royal Army Medical Corps before falling derelict.
Lord Mayor Treloar Cripples Home & College 1907 - 1908
The site was acquired by Sir William Treloar in 1907, following an act of Parliament (Alton Military Hospital Act 1907) that allowed the site to be sold to him. His aim was to open a hospital for the treatment of children suffering from tuberculosis of the bones or joints and a college ‘to train crippled boys in skilled handicrafts to enable them to earn their own living’.
The first patients arrived on the 8th of September 1908.
The Queen Alexandra League produced at least four series of postcards, capturing the earliest days of Treloar Home & College, they can be found here Queen Alexandra League Treloar Hospital.
