Places of Worship
In this section, you will find chapels, places of worship, and meeting places that have not been covered in the Around Alton section of the website.
St Mary's Anglican Chapel
In 1910, the Anglican Community of St. Mary the Virgin, Wantage, bought a house called Highfield on Turk Street to open a residential training centre for women and girls, who, in the wording of the day, were considered 'feeble-minded'. A chapel designed by William Douglas Caröe and built by D.J. Kemp of Alton was added in 1913.
The Reredos in the first image was designed in 1935 by W.D.Caroe for St Mary's, Alton, in memory of a former Sister Superior. They were saved when the Chapel closed and are now located in St Mary's Church, Somers Town, NW1.
Alton Congregational Church
A Chapel stood on part of the site now occupied by the former Church, however by the 1830's it had become rather run down and a new place of worship was required. Work began in 1834, with the new Church holding its first service on the 14th April 1835.
The Church was originally much smaller, however some houses on Normandy Street were demolished in the 1840’s leaving a gap that was occupied when the Church was extended in 1868. The Church closed in 1994, it was later converted into 3 houses.
