Mid-Hants Railway
The Mid-Hants Railway opened in October 1865. As with so many Railway Lines, passenger use declined, leading to the order to close the line, with the last passenger service taking place on the 5th February 1973.
However that was not the end of the story as part of the line was reopened as a Heritage Railway:
Alresford to Ropley opened on 30th April 1977, the extension to Medstead & Four Marks opened on 28th May 1983, the final section to Alton opened on 25th May 1985. Known as the Watercress line, it is a popular tourist attraction.
The pictures on this page are of the railway line between Alton and Winchester, it will include the stations at :
Medstead & Four Marks, Ropley, Alresford & Itchen Abbas.
This page does not include pictures of Alton Railway Station (these can be found in the Station Road & the Railway Station section of this website) Nor does it include the station at Winchester as the line connected to the station that was already there (Winchester Railway Station opened in 1839)
